Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Eastern Region has initiated legal actions to recover more than GHS 32 million owed by customers in accumulated water bill arrears.

The 32 million cedis unpaid bills is having devastating consequences on operations of the company in Eastern Region.

Currently, the GWCL has processed an initial batch of 15 recalcitrant customers who are expected to appear before court in the coming days.

The move is part of a broader crackdown on individuals and institutions that have failed to honour their water bill obligations despite multiple reminders and disconnection notices.

According to the Regional Chief Manager, Ing. Paul C. Akpanya, the ballooning debt is crippling operations and threatening the company’s ability to deliver reliable water services.

“We will go the extra mile within the remit of the law to recover every arrear owed the company. This is essential for sustaining our operations and improving service delivery to the public.” he said.

The court action is directed at customers who have ignored several payment notices, remain in long-term arrears, and those who have refused to pay their debts even after disconnection.
