The Chief Justice has ordered the temporary closure of the District Court in Kwame Danso following an attack on court staff on Wednesday, December 10, which left court staff traumatized.

In a circular dated December 12, 2025, signed by the Deputy Judicial Secretary in charge of the Northern Sector, Justice Frederick Tetteh, the temporary closure is effective until further notice.

“Following the occurrences at Kwame Danso District Court, I have been directed by His Lordship the Chief Justice to request you to close the court temporarily from today, 12th December, 2025, until further notice,” the circular to the Regional Administrative Officer, Bono East Region, stated.

On Thursday, December 11, the Judicial Service Association of Ghana (JUSAG) issued a statement condemning the attack on court staff in no uncertain terms.

The statement signed by the National President of JUSAG, Samuel Afotey Otu, JUSAG advised staff of the Court to stay away from work until their safety can be guaranteed.

JUSAG also appealed to the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to close down the court until adequate measures are put in place to ensure the safety of staff and court users.

Mr. Otu called on the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.

The call of JUSAG has been acknowledged, with the circular urging that the regional administrative manager “treat this directive as urgent.”

Police Statement

A statement from the Bono East Regional Police, signed by ASP Appiah Danquah, Staff Officer and acting PRO, said calm has been restored. The police narrated what happened as follows;

  1. The Bono East Regional Police Command has restored calm at Kwame Danso in the Sene West District, following a violent mob attack on the District Court and the District Police Headquarters on Wednesday, 10 December 2025.
  2. At about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, while the Kwame Danso District Court was in session, an irate mob of about 100 youths besieged the court premises. They attacked persons at the court and vandalized furniture, fans, and other items on sight. The youth also forcibly took away two accused persons who were standing trial and assaulted the complainant in the case.
  3. The youths later attacked two officers who were on duty at the Kwame Danso Police Headquarters and vandalized the police station.
  4. A reinforcement team from the Atebubu Division, together with a detachment of the Formed Police Units (FPUs), arrived to restore order.
  5. On the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Kwame Danso Police Station and District Police Headquarters have been closed down, and the personnel have been reassigned to other parts of the region until further notice.
  6. The Command assures the public that it will pursue and track down all persons connected to this criminal act, and perpetrators will be identified, arrested, and made to face the full consequences of the law.
