The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Ransford Owusu Boakye, has urged residents and visitors to consciously reduce waste generation and avoid littering during the Christmas festivities.

According to him, while Christmas is a period of celebration, family reunions and social activities, it is also the time when waste generation in the municipality peaks.

He noted that food waste, gift wrappers and retail packaging contribute significantly to environmental pollution during the festive season.

Mr Owusu Boakye said reusing plastics and polythene materials could greatly reduce the volume of waste generated, stressing the need for responsible waste disposal by residents.

He also called on event organisers to collaborate with the Municipal Assembly and waste management companies to ensure proper management of refuse generated during outdoor activities and celebrations.

The MCE assured residents that the Assembly will ensure waste collectors intensify household waste collection throughout the festive season to prevent the accumulation of filth in the municipality.

Mr Owusu Boakye made the call in an interview with the media during the observation of the National Sanitation Day exercise, which saw the central business district cleaned and gutters desilted.

He cautioned shop owners and traders against indiscriminate littering and the dumping of refuse into drainage systems, warning that punitive measures will be enforced against offenders to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
