Campaign aide Kwesi Botchway Jnr. has asserted that the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, January 19, Botchway said, “Dr. Bawumia is winning the NPP primaries, it’s not a 50/50 election.”
He added that party delegates have a clear preference for the next flagbearer.
“The delegates are clear in their mind about what they want and who they want to be their flag bearer. And they know there’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawamia who can win power for the great NPP in the 2028 elections.”
Botchway emphasized that while internal competition is healthy, the choice of candidate must focus on the party’s ability to reclaim power in 2028.
The January 2026 primary date was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to provide sufficient time for campaigning and ensure internal cohesion ahead of the general elections.
Other prominent contenders who have declared their intention to contest the flagbearer position include former Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
