A brother of former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, and eight others have been charged over the shooting incident at Kwabenya which led to Sarah Adwoa Safo being hospitalized.

Akofena, together with the eight others, have all pleaded not guilty to five counts of charges, including causing unlawful damage, and have been granted bail by the Adenta Circuit Court.

Each of the accused, namely Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, 40, businessman; Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, 38; Kwabena Safo, 35; Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, 37; Badu Enock, 34; Richard Ayittey, 38 and Gideon Safo.

The rest are – Nana Kwadwo Koomson, 22, all being private security guards; and Nana Afriyie, 38, farmer, was granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties to be justified.

The case has been adjourned to June 30, 2026.

Brief facts

Per the brief facts of the case, the complainants are police personnel at the surveillance unit of the National Operations Directorate.

While the first accused (A1), Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, is a businessman at Kwabenya, Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakwa Sam, Badu Enock, Richard Ayittey, 38, Gideon Safo, and Nana Kwadwo Koomson, 22, all being private security guards, and Nana Afriyie, a farmer, are the second to ninth accused respectively.

The prosecution stated that on June 21, 2026, the complainants were deployed to Kristo Asafo SHS at Awoshie to maintain law and order following issues surrounding the final funeral rite of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

It said the team, while on duty, received a distress call of a shooting incident in A1’s house located at Kwabenya Musuku.

It stated that the complainants quickly mobilized and rushed to the scene, and on-the-spot investigation by the team revealed a ceremony was being held to install A1 as successor to the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

The facts stated that, in the course of the ceremony, Sarah Adjoa Safo, the former MP for the area, arrived at the entrance of A1’s house but was denied access by A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A9 and others who were in khaki uniforms and armed with pump action guns and pistols.

It said the denial of Adjoa Safo access to the premises led to a shooting incident in which she sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries to the left side of her face, back of her head, left ear, and the lower jaw.

It said visible gunshot marks were also identified on her Toyota Prado Land Cruiser vehicle with the windscreen and door glasses all shattered, and she was later rushed to hospital for treatment.

The complainants then disarmed the accused persons and retrieved six pump action guns loaded with forty-two cartridges and one expended cartridge wadding.

It said further searches conducted in a Toyota Land Cruiser parked in A1’s house revealed two pistols loaded with twenty live ammunition concealed in a black bag.

Also, another pistol loaded with 13 rounds was retrieved from A2 upon further search.

On 22/06/2026, A1 was arrested but denied the offence and added that he left the scene to his second house before the shooting occurred.

However, a search conducted in his room led to the retrieval of 120 9mm live ammunition, 50 pieces of 40mm ammunition, and 25 pieces of 45mm ammunition which he claimed ownership of.

A1 also admitted that A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A9 are his personal security guards. The accused persons were subsequently arraigned before this honorable court. Case under investigation.
