The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced 100 scholarships for young members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Western Region.
The initiative is aimed at building the capacity of the party’s youth and equipping them with the skills and qualifications needed to take advantage of opportunities in government and the private sector.
Speaking at the opening of the two-day Western Regional Quadrennial Youth Conference of the NDC in Takoradi, the Member of Parliament for Ellembele, Armah-Kofi Buah said young people constitute a significant proportion of Ghana’s electorate and must be given the necessary support to develop their leadership capacity and contribute to national development.
He said the scholarship initiative was inspired by an encounter with a young party member who complained about being overlooked for government appointments despite his commitment and efforts within the party.
Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah explained that attempts to explore opportunities for the individual revealed that he lacked the requisite higher qualifications, convincing him of the need for deliberate investment in the education and skills development of young party members.
He said the 100 scholarships would cover various areas, including formal education, vocational training, skills development and information technology, depending on the needs and aspirations of beneficiaries.
“And today, I’m announcing a hundred scholarships for you, the youth front of the Western Region. I don’t care what you want to do, whether it’s trade, skills, IT, advancing yourselves. We are going to fight to support you to do that, because one of the key things that we must do is to make sure that we put you in a place where there’s no excuse.
“It’s only fair that we have to help you, the youth who are leaders, to build your capacity, because in the NDC, I know when you work hard and you have what it takes, you have to be promoted, and you will be promoted.”
For his part, the Western Regional Communications Director of the NDC, Richard Kirk Mensah, acknowledged the critical role played by the youth in the party’s victory in the 2024 elections.
He, however, cautioned that the contribution of the youth would amount to little if the party fails to consolidate its gains and secure victory in the 2028 elections.
Mr. Kirk Mensah therefore urged the youth to remain committed to the party and work towards retaining power in the next general elections.
