Victims of recent floods in several communities across Ghana have benefited from relief support from the Lions Clubs International, District 418 Ghana.
The gesture was part of efforts to ease the hardship caused by recent flooding in the country.

The organisation’s interventions reached affected residents in Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region, Winneba, and parts of Accra, including Abokobi, Ashongman and Tema Community 5.

The relief exercises targeted families whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the floods, with particular attention to vulnerable groups including the elderly and persons with disabilities.

In Samreboi, where the Samre and Tano rivers burst their banks in June, more than 200 houses were submerged and 26 buildings completely collapsed. The disaster affected more than 500 residents and claimed two lives.

Lions International District 418 Ghana visited the community with essential relief items including rice, cooking oil, tomatoes, gari and drinking water.

The intervention was supported by a US$15,000 grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), with additional donations of clothing, footwear and sanitary items contributed by members of Lions International.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality welcomed the intervention and appealed for more support to help affected residents rebuild their lives.

Some beneficiaries also expressed appreciation while highlighting the continued challenges they face following the disaster.

In Winneba, Lions Clubs International also distributed relief items to households affected by the recent floods.

The package included rice, cooking oil, mackerel, gari, bottled water and cutlery.

District Governor of Lions Clubs International, District 418 Ghana, Lion Ebo Prah Manson, said the intervention was intended to provide immediate relief to families affected by the disaster while helping restore their dignity.

He said Lions Clubs International remains committed to supporting communities affected by disasters, including floods and fire outbreaks.

The organisation also extended its relief efforts to flood victims in parts of Accra, including Abokobi, Ashongman and Tema Community 5.

Beneficiaries in these areas also received food, clothing, cooking oil and other non-perishable items to help them cope with the aftermath of the floods.

For Lions Clubs International, the interventions form part of its broader humanitarian mandate to support vulnerable people and communities during times of crisis.

The District Governor says Lions International has about 1.4 million volunteers worldwide, while Leo Clubs have more than two million young people who contribute to humanitarian and community development initiatives.

The Immediate Past District Leo President, Richard Okai, said the Leo Club serves as the youth wing of Lions Clubs International and works with the Lions to provide relief and promote development opportunities in communities.

Across the affected communities, beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the assistance, while calling for sustained support as they work to recover from the impact of the floods.

Lions Clubs International says it remains open to partnerships with individuals, organisations and other stakeholders seeking to support community development and humanitarian interventions across Ghana.
