President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where Ghana is expected to feature prominently in discussions on global development, reparatory justice, international cooperation and investment.
The 81st session of the General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
The UN’s high-level week runs from September 18 to 28, 2026.
President Mahama is scheduled to host two high-level side events during the week, including an engagement on the Accra Reset and another focused on reparatory justice.
On Monday, September 21, the President will host a High-Level Event on the Accra Reset under the theme, “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.”
The event is expected to bring together world leaders to discuss global development cooperation, with particular focus on Africa and the Global South.
On Wednesday, September 23, President Mahama will host another high-level event focused on reparatory justice.
The discussions will centre on “From Commitments to Action on Reparatory Justice”, including international cooperation on the return and restitution of cultural properties and heritage.
The reparatory justice engagement follows Ghana’s Next Steps Conference held in Accra earlier this year.
According to Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the New York event will receive progress reports from panels established following the conference, including a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice and global panels on cultural heritage restitution and reparatory justice.
Mahama to deliver Ghana’s statement
President Mahama is also scheduled to deliver Ghana’s official statement during the General Debate on Thursday, September 24.
Beyond the General Assembly, his programme includes meetings with world leaders, the UN Secretary-General and executives of multinational companies.
The engagements are expected to focus on strengthening partnerships and encouraging investment in Ghana.
The President is also scheduled to participate in a US-Ghana Presidential Roundtable organised by the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce and speak at the Council on Foreign Relations.
He will further attend the Ocean Panel Leaders’ Meeting and ring the NASDAQ Closing Bell as part of efforts to promote Ghana as a destination for business and investment.
President Mahama will conclude his New York programme on Friday, September 25, with a town hall meeting with members of the Ghanaian community.
At the engagement, he is expected to share updates on his vision for national development.
The President is accompanied by the First Lady, Lordina Dramani Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, other Cabinet ministers, senior officials from the Presidency and other government officials.
