President John Dramani Mahama has begun his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York with a meeting with Alex Soros, Chairman and Founder of the Open Society Foundations (OSF).
Mr. Soros, an investor and philanthropist who has previously engaged with President Mahama, said the foundation is interested in exploring partnerships and supporting ECOWAS’ regional integration efforts.
Sunday’s meeting precedes a planned presidential roundtable being coordinated by the Open Society Foundations, bringing together a select group of global foundation presidents and CEOs.
Participating organisations include the Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller Foundation, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler and UBS Optimus, among others.
President Mahama is also scheduled to host two high-level side events during the UN General Assembly, focusing on the Accra Reset and reparatory justice.
On Monday, September 21, the President will host a high-level event on the Accra Reset under the theme, “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.”
The event is expected to bring together world leaders and other stakeholders to discuss the future of global development cooperation, with particular focus on Africa and the Global South.
On Wednesday, September 23, President Mahama will host another high-level event dedicated to reparatory justice.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All,” and runs from September 18 to 28, 2026.
