President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the country marks Founder’s Day.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, Mahama described Founder’s Day as an opportunity to pause and honour Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and nation-building.
He said Nkrumah’s pursuit of liberty, Pan-African unity and self-reliance helped position Ghana as a beacon of hope on the global stage.
“His bold declaration that ‘the black man is capable of managing his own affairs’ remains the bedrock of our national pride,” President Mahama wrote.
The President said the work of nation-building remains unfinished and urged Ghanaians at home and abroad to draw from Nkrumah’s vision in contributing to the country’s development.
“Let us draw strength from Osagyefo’s vision and contribute in our own way to attaining the Resetting Ghana Agenda,” he said.
He also called on citizens to rise above division, embrace selfless patriotism and work towards economic freedom and social justice.
“Just as Nkrumah fought for our political independence, we have a collective duty today to build a prosperous, equitable, and resilient Ghana,” he stated.
Founder’s Day is observed on September 21, the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The date was restored as a statutory public holiday following the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025, with September 21, 2026 officially recognised as Founder’s Day.
Nkrumah was born on September 21, 1909, at Nkroful in the then Gold Coast. He became a leading figure in the independence movement and served as Prime Minister before Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
