The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have given the government until midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to resolve outstanding issues concerning the placement of teachers promoted in 2025 and payment of their salary arrears.
This follows delays in fully implementing the 2025 promotion placement and payment of arrears, despite an agreement with government to automatically place all affected teachers by the end of September.
In a statement dated Tuesday, September 22, the teacher unions said the situation had created further tension and frustration among teachers across the country.
“It has come to the attention of the Teacher Unions that the 2025 promotion placement, together with the payment of arrears, have not been fully effected. This is in clear violation of the agreement reached with government to automatically place all affected teachers by close of September, 2026,” the statement said.
The unions also cited the renewal of the Collective Agreement and payment of Deprived Area Allowance among the outstanding issues.
They warned that failure to resolve the concerns by the deadline could lead to action by teachers.
“We hereby serve notice that if by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise,” they stated.
The unions urged teachers to remain calm, follow official directives from their leadership and participate in any actions announced.
