Inflation down, but prices remain high and pockets remain tight – NPP’s Issah Mohammed

NPP Savannah Regional Secretary questions impact of economic gains on households.

New Patrotic Party Regional Secretary for the Savannah Region, Issah Mohammed, has argued that reported improvements in Ghana’s economic indicators have yet to translate into meaningful relief for ordinary Ghanaians, particularly in the prices of essential goods and services.

Speaking to Isaac Addae on The Verdict on Starr FM, Mr Mohammed said while the government has highlighted improvements in inflation and the exchange rate, many households continue to struggle with the high cost of living.

He questioned the practical impact of the reported economic gains on ordinary consumers, arguing that a reduction in inflation does not necessarily mean that prices of goods have returned to their previous levels.

“You came and met an inflation of 23%. Today it is 5%. Good. How does it translate into the water that I used to buy?” he asked.

Mr Mohammed cited the price of bottled water as an example, saying he previously bought it for GH¢2.50, but now pays about GH¢3.50 despite the reduction in inflation.

He argued that economic indicators such as inflation and the exchange rate must be assessed alongside the actual cost of goods and the purchasing power of households.

According to him, even where prices of some products have fallen, the reduction does not necessarily provide relief to people who lack sufficient disposable income to afford them.

“Yes, the prices have come down. But yet, somebody had money, even if it was sold at, say, 600… today it is sold at 150 cedis. You don’t have the money in your pocket to go,” he said.

Mr Mohammed further argued that the impact of economic policies should be measured by how they affect the daily lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

He cited the experiences of workers, trainees and other groups, arguing that some continue to face financial difficulties despite the reported improvements in the economy.

“That lower inflation and changes in the exchange rate should ultimately translate into improved purchasing power and better living conditions for Ghanaians”. He stated.
