Ghana’s Black Maidens have bowed out of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan in the quarter-finals at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.
Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side came into the encounter on the back of a hard-fought Round of 16 victory over Argentina, where they secured qualification through a penalty shootout.
However, the Maidens were forced into a change in their starting lineup following a red card in their previous game, setting the stage for a difficult quarter-final test against the Asian side.
The first half was a closely contested affair, with Japan dictating the tempo while Ghana maintained a disciplined defensive structure, keeping their opponents at bay.
But the Maidens’ resistance was broken in the second half.
Japan capitalised on a rebound in the 54th minute, with Nanami Kurita reacting quickest to send the ball into the back of the net and hand her side the crucial lead.
Ghana pushed forward in search of an equaliser, hoping to keep their World Cup dreams alive. But Japan’s solid defensive organisation proved difficult to break down, as the Maidens struggled to find a way back into the contest.
The final whistle confirmed a painful 1-0 defeat for Ghana, bringing their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign to an end at the quarter-final stage.
Despite the disappointment, the Black Maidens’ journey in Morocco showcased their resilience, attacking quality and fighting spirit, as they delivered a campaign that offered plenty of promise for the future of women’s football in Ghana.
