GPRTU backs TrafficTechGH cameras but demands equal enforcement against traders choking bus stops and walkways

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has welcomed the nationwide rollout of the TrafficTechGH digital traffic enforcement system but is urging authorities to apply traffic regulations evenly, particularly the long-standing ban on trading at bus stops, roads and pedestrian walkways.

The system, which began operations on Sunday, 1 November 2026 after an earlier postponement, uses cameras and electronic notices to detect violations such as speeding.

The Ghana Police Service has deployed officers and cameras across the country to support enforcement.

Commercial transport operators had earlier threatened or staged nationwide service suspensions in protest.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Show, Morning Star on Monday, November 2, 2026, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah said the union has no objection to the new measures.

“I don’t have any issue against the implementation of the new traffic regime,” he stated.

The union’s concern centres on Regulation 146 of LI 519, which prohibits trading on roads, at bus stops and on pedestrian walkways.

Amoah argued that traders have taken over these spaces in major cities including Accra, Kasoa, Lapaz, Kumasi and Takoradi, disrupting transport operations and forcing drivers to park in unauthorised places.

Pedestrians are increasingly forced onto the roadway, creating safety risks. He noted that while authorities have indicated the cameras will initially focus on overspeeding, police continue to arrest drivers for parking violations caused by the encroachment.

“We are saying that now there is a law, and why are you not implementing the law? And now all your focus is on the new TrafficTechGH,” Amoah said.

He stressed that the same legal framework underpinning TrafficTechGH also requires enforcement against roadside trading.
