At least five persons have lost their lives after an illegal mining pit caved in at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident, which happened late Wednesday, October 1, 2025, trapped several miners, locally known as galamseyers underground.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), with support from local volunteers, managed to save eight miners after hours of frantic efforts.
Confirming the tragedy, District Chief Executive (DCE) Ibrahim Ishak said it highlights the deadly risks of illegal mining.
“The preliminary information we have is that this was an illegal mining operation. Our rescue teams, including NADMO, worked tirelessly. While we are grateful that eight individuals were brought out safely, it is a profound tragedy that five lives have been lost,” the DCE said.
The survivors have been taken to the Nyinahini Government Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident has renewed calls for urgent action against illegal mining, which continues to threaten lives and the environment across Ghana.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing at the site, while investigations into the collapse have begun.
