Seven people have been arrested in a joint anti-drug operation carried out by security agencies in collaboration with the Asante Akyem North Municipal Assembly as part of efforts to curb substance abuse in the area.
The operation, led by Municipal Director of Health Roland Miah and supported by the police and other state security agencies, followed a stakeholder meeting convened to address growing concerns over the sale and abuse of illegal drugs within the municipality.
Four coordinated teams made up of police officers and other stakeholders stormed identified hotspots during the exercise.
The teams apprehended seven suspects believed to be involved in the sale of unapproved substances. Some individuals reportedly fled, abandoning their goods, which were later seized by authorities.
Officials displayed the confiscated items after the operation, describing them as illegal and unapproved drugs banned under Ghanaian law.
They stressed that the exercise was conducted in line with legal provisions and aimed at protecting public health and safety.
The suspects have been cautioned and are expected to face the appropriate legal processes. Authorities warned that anyone found engaging in similar activities will be prosecuted to deter others.
Health officials also highlighted the dangers associated with consuming unprescribed and unauthorized drugs, noting their link to serious health complications and broader public health challenges.
Municipal authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the crackdown and urged residents to remain vigilant about the substances they consume.
They also called on the public to support ongoing efforts to improve safety and human development in the municipality.
The exercise marks the second major anti-drug operation conducted in the area within the past year as authorities intensify efforts to tackle substance abuse.
