Over 2000 residents in the North Tongu District of the Volta region have benefited from a special free medical outreach programme organised by the Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa in partnership with the globally celebrated Cuban medical brigade.

The medical team led by the Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Annette Chao Garcia, had about 15 Cuban medical doctors who screened and issued medications to residents for free.

The event which took place at Mepe, had residents troop in from the various communities in the Districts and the other adjoining Districts.

The residents were screened for various medical conditions such as malaria, Covid-19, Blood Pressure, diabetes and other non-communical conditions.

Speaking at the event, the MP, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa indicated that the initiative is in line with his commitment to the well-being of the people of North Tongu especially in the area of health, which has been a priority area for him since he took office in 2013.

He said, “Health is wealth, and so, as Member of Parliament, North Tongu Constituency since assuming office on the 7th of January 2013, I have prioritised health delivery and so if you’ve cared to follow my work in the constituency you will notice that health care is number one, education is number two and then other interventions follow because we must all be alive first and we must all be healthy first before we can do anything.”

The MP further reiterated his resolve to ensuring that the District achieves Universal Health Coverage as long as he remains in office.

The Cuban Ambassador, Her Excellency Annette Chao Garcia told the media that the initiative is in the interest of the Cuban government’s continues support for Ghana and its development.

“For us, the most important thing is human and to help the human being, you have to give them free health care and this is the thing that we are doing right now,” she added.

She commended the MP, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, who she noted is a politician who understands humanity and the needs of his people and has a great relationship with her office and the Cuban society here in Ghana.

Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa since taking office in 2013 has spearheaded a transformational agenda especially in the area of health for the North Tongu District.

Some of his interventions include the donation of critical medical equipment like incubators, theatre beds and the establishment of a cervical cancer centre and its screening equipment all at the Battor Catholic hospital.

Through his interventions, the Battor Catholic hospital has seen a further expansion and renovation of the Children’s ward to an additional 50-bed capacity.

Among his endless interventions, the MP in 2021 also donated a salon car to the longest serving midwife in the District to further encourage health workers in the area to give out their best.
