Ghana has been notably exempted from the United States’ most recent visa restrictions witj other few countries.
This was announcedby Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Wednesday, December 17, during a farewell ceremony for Ghana Army Engineers heading to Jamaica to assist with post-disaster reconstruction.
According to Ablakwa, the exemption highlights the close diplomatic relationship between Ghana and the United States.
“While many of our neighbouring countries were included in the latest US travel measures, Ghana was spared, reflecting the effectiveness of our foreign policy under President Mahama’s leadership,” he said.
The new restrictions, set to take effect on January 1, expand the US travel ban to include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Syria, and Palestinian Authority passport holders.
Laos and Sierra Leone have been moved from partial to full restrictions, while several other countries—including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe—face tighter visa controls.
