The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared its full readiness for the much-anticipated parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency, following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold fresh elections in 19 out of the 37 polling stations in the area.
This move comes in response to widespread concerns over the credibility of results from the December 7, 2024, General Elections.
Speaking to Starr News, NDC Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Foyo Gbande, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process, stating their determination to reclaim what they describe as a “denied mandate.”
“We have been engaging in our daily politicking. Whatever the strength of our parties may be, it should be enough to secure our participation in the elections,” Gbande said. “Ultimately, this is about the relationship between the people and their political party. The rerun will provide a clearer manifestation of the people’s verdict.”
He stated the unity within the NDC and the leadership’s resolve:
“Whether it’s two days or ten, once the National Chairman and the President—our party leader—agree that we should contest, we will go in united and with goodwill.”
Gbande didn’t hold back in his criticism of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of corruption and mismanagement while in power.
“Our opponents come with a tag of fraudulence. Ghanaians still remember the hardship, corruption, and destruction of state institutions under the NPP. That sentiment will surely reflect in the outcome of these rerun elections.”
He questioned whether individuals previously accused of misconduct while in government should be trusted again.
However, in a sharp rebuttal, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed accused the Electoral Commission of succumbing to political pressure.
“The EC’s decision to conduct fresh elections appears driven more by political influence than by procedural integrity,” he asserted, calling for thorough investigations to uphold transparency and protect the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process.
With both major parties sharpening their rhetoric and mobilizing their bases, all eyes are now on Ablekuma North as it braces for a critical electoral rematch.
