The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has firmly assured the public that there will be no military deployment for the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun election taking place today.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Omane Boamah announced that the Ghana Police Service will take full responsibility for maintaining law and order during the electoral process.
He noted that the decision was made to uphold peace, protect citizens’ rights, and avoid the unfortunate incidents of electoral violence experienced in the past.
“Let’s learn from incidents such as the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence and the tragic killing of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 general elections,” the Minister stressed.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a democratic, transparent, and violence-free election process, adding that the police have the necessary training and capacity to manage electoral security.
“There will be no military deployment. The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job. Let’s keep the peace and make our voices heard as John Dramani Mahama resets Ghana and creates more opportunities for Ghanaians,” Dr. Omane Boamah stated.
Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday announced that it will conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 selected polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The decision follows extensive deliberations between the Commission and representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to resolve the impasse regarding the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election results in the constituency.
The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare on July 2, 2025 during Post 2024 Election Evaluation and Dialogue justified that based on experiences from the 2024 elections, there is the need for military presence at collation centers during Presidential and Parliamentary elections describing any suggestion to do without it as a joke.
