Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a stern warning to the Mahama-led administration, stating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not forget the violence that marred the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North if those responsible are not held accountable.
Dr. Bawumia’s comments follow a series of violent incidents at polling centres during the rerun held on Friday, July 11.
Notably, chaos erupted at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, where former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, allegedly discharged pepper spray during a confrontation, prompting a temporary suspension of voting.
The disturbances intensified at the St. Peter’s polling station when unidentified individuals, believed to be political thugs, stormed the premises, attacking journalists and party officials.
NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female polling agent were among those assaulted, suffering visible facial injuries. Hawa Koomson was also reportedly injured during the incident.
Reacting to the violence, Dr. Bawumia demanded swift and decisive action from President John Dramani Mahama and the security agencies, insisting that anything short of prosecution would send the wrong signal.
“What we have to be clear about is that the people who have perpetrated these acts have been caught on video. I call on the president to take action and all the people in charge of this country, the administration, to take action to bring the perpetrators to book. This is the only way we can deter this in future,” he said.
He further warned, “let me assure you that should they not be brought to book, we will not forget. They will be brought to book no matter how long it takes. We will not forget what has happened.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) is overseeing the rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency to resolve unresolved collation issues from the December 2024 general elections.
While results from 18 out of 37 disputed stations were certified, the remaining 19 required fresh voting to complete the electoral process.
The constituency has been without a Member of Parliament since the 2024 elections. The EC maintains the rerun is necessary to ensure full representation and electoral integrity.
