Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court in the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety. The court specified that the bail comes with no justification.
His lead counsel, Daniel Martey Addo of Nkrumah & Associates, expressed satisfaction with the ruling. “We felt strongly that the decision made earlier was not proper in law. The same law, however, gave us an opportunity to repeat the application and correct such errors. We have argued and we are glad that our prayer has been heard,” he told journalists outside the courtroom.
According to the defense team, Abronye’s health had deteriorated while in custody, making the court’s decision a relief for both him and his family. Lawyers are now working to meet the bail conditions for his immediate release.
On September 8, 2025, Abronye DC was arrested on a charge of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace and subsequently charged with publication of false news. Police say the arrest followed comments Abronye made publicly, including allegations against the Inspector General of Police and the ruling political party, which the authorities regarded as potentially inflammatory.
Shortly before his arrest, Abronye had reportedly submitted requests for political asylum to eight countries; Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, and Germany. In his petitions, he cited persistent political persecution, threats to his life, and alleged misuse of state security powers under the current government.
After his arrest, he was remanded into police custody. His lawyers later disclosed that he had refused food and water while in detention as a form of protest. He has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The bail decision marks a significant development in the case, providing temporary relief to the outspoken NPP regional chairman as the legal process continues.
