Kumasi: Abundant Life AG Church reopens after shutdown over leadership dispute

The Abundant Life Assemblies of God Church at Bohyen in Kumasi is set to reopen today, Sunday, April 26, 2026, under a newly constituted leadership, following its temporary closure by the Executive Presbytery of the Assemblies of God, Ghana over a prolonged leadership dispute.

The reopening comes after the national leadership shut down the church in response to escalating tensions linked to a three-year vacancy in the pastoral position, following the retirement of Rev. Stephen Manu.

The closure directive, announced on April 19, 2026, was enforced with support from the Ghana Police Service after initial attempts were disrupted by agitated members who resisted the decision and confronted church officials.

In the intervening period, the Executive Presbytery dissolved all existing leadership structures at the Bohyen assembly, including the church board, departments, and committees, citing constitutional breaches and unauthorized administrative control by a section of the congregation.

Church authorities maintained that the move was necessary to restore order and reaffirm the constitutional mandate that governs pastoral appointments and church administration across all Assemblies of God congregations in Ghana.

With the reopening, a new leadership team approved by the national body is expected to take charge of the church’s operations. The administration will oversee activities in line with the church’s constitution and directives from the Executive Presbytery.

The leadership has indicated that the church will accommodate members willing to comply with the new arrangements, while cautioning against any actions that could disrupt peace or interfere with church property.

The development marks a significant step toward resolving the impasse and restoring normalcy at the Bohyen assembly after weeks of unrest.
