The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Korsah, has commissioned 188 lockable stores at the Agormanya Market in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region.

This project is part of the World Bank-funded Secondary Cities Support Program aimed at boosting local economies and improving infrastructure.

The lockable stores are the second project to be commissioned under the program in the municipality, following the recent inauguration of a two-storey business center by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Construction of roads and drainage systems under the same initiative is also progressing steadily.

Speaking at the commissioning event on Monday, November 24, 2024, Minister Martin Adjei Korsah reiterated government’s commitment to addressing urban migration by improving infrastructure in communities like Lower Manya Krobo.

“The Akufo-Addo government realizes the times we are in. Many people are moving from local areas to urban centers. Projects like these are designed to ensure that life is comfortable for residents in such areas,” he said.

He further defended the government’s borrowing, explaining that funds are being used for transformational projects, such as the Agormanya Market development.

“This project is an example of why government borrows money. It demonstrates the transformation happening in this area,” he added.

The Minister also called on residents to manage the facility well and urged the assembly to ensure quick allocation to market traders.

The Local Government Minister urged residents of Kroboland to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 elections, stating that continued development hinges on their votes.

“the appreciation you can show is to make sure that if what government is doing is good then you urge government on to do more by voting for government to stay in power. So Nene, I want to appeal to you that this time around kroboland must show that we are together with government because we appreciate what is being done and we yearn for more ” the Minister appealed.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and NPP parliamentary candidate, Simon Kwaku Tetteh, expressed confidence that the facility will boost the local economy by providing secure storage for traders in the municipality’s largest market.

Some traders expressed relief, noting that the lockable stores will offer a safer environment for their goods, especially as the market has been prone to flooding.

Nene Agbau Narh IV, Divisional Chief Of Djebian commended government for the initiative but appealed for establishment of Mango and tomatoes factories to add value to the produce which are in grown in the area.

The Secondary Cities program involves $245 million Urban Development Grant (UDG) provided by the World Bank for markets, roads, and drainage systems in 35 municipalities across Ghana.
