The flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor, has announced her intention to take legal action against former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This follows Mahama’s recent remarks questioning the eligibility of certain presidential candidates to appear on the ballot.
During a recent campaign tour, Mr Mahama expressed his confusion over the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify some candidates, including the People’s National Convention (PNC) led by Bernard Mornah, while allowing others he deemed less deserving to remain on the ballot.
“The PNC is more worthy than several parties that I see on the ballot paper. That is the issue we have with the Electoral Commission; sometimes, they are discriminatory. There are people on this ballot that Bernard Mornah qualifies more to be here than, and I know this will provoke controversy, but I mean it.”
These remarks did not sit well with Akua Donkor, who voiced her displeasure at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra. She declared her plan to sue the former president, claiming he had no right to question her place on the ballot since he had not contributed to the formation of her party.
“If Mahama claims to be an ex-President, I will take him to court. I will sue him for 2 trillion cedis. Why would he say I do not merit to appear on the ballot?” Akua Donkor said.
She further stated that she intends to serve the Electoral Commission with a writ after the process and emphasized that, as a Ghanaian citizen, she deserves to be on the ballot just like any other presidential candidate.
“I take strong offense at what he said,” she added.
