The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has said President Akufo-Addo has cleared his appointees before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sits on the Covid-19 expenditure Audit Report.
This comes on the back of President Akufo-Addo stating that nothing dishonorable was done with the COVID-19 funds.
Addressing Parliament on the State of the Nation on Wednesday March 8, 2023, President Akufo-Addo indicated that his administration ordered for an audit of the COVID-19 funds.
The Auditor General’s special report on Ghana’s COVID 19 expenditure has revealed that the Ministry of Health paid over 10 million cedis in insurance premiums to cover 10,000 frontline health workers and allied health professionals without a life insurance policy document.
The report which spans between March 2020 and June 2022 scrutinizes how monies received from the various institutions including World Bank, AFDB, EU and the contingency fund summing up to the tune of 21.8 billion were utilized.
However, the Attorney General, Godfred Dame in a letter to the Auditor-General, Mr Johnson Akuamoah-Asiedu quoting Article 187(5) has said that the Audit report should have been released to Parliament before getting to the public.
Mr. Dame added that Article 187(6) of the Constitution also stated that Parliament should debate on the report and where necessary set a committee to deal with any matters arising from it.
Commenting on the development, the Builsa South lawmaker has stated that a John Mahama administration will make sure that there is a thorough audit into the COVID-19 expenditures.
“Nana Akufo-Addo the Chief Clearing Agent has cleared his appointees even before the PAC sits on the Covid-19 expenditure Audit Report. You now get why Dame, Kyei etc attacked the Auditor General for publishing the report?” Mr. Apaak stated in a tweet.
He continued: “No worries, John Mahama will probe and punish the chop chop of COVID funds.”
