Akufo-Addo inherited a corrupt Ghana – Rawlings

Former President J.J. Rawlings has said the Akufo-Addo government inherited the worst form of corruption from the previous administration.

“By the time this administration came into office, the country was literally drowning in the practice of corruption with impunity. This administration has, therefore, inherited national corruption at its worst,” Rawlings noted when a delegation of political leaders from Sierra Leone visited him in Accra.

According to Rawlings, the corruption in the country had been festered by the refusal of past governments to handle the canker.

He believes Akufo-Addo risks failure if he does not wage an efficient war against corruption.

“The current government owes its own survival to the anti-corruption crusade”.

Mr. Rawlings who has not hidden his admiration for the 73-year-old Ghanaian President is often criticised by his party, the NDC, for his open show of affection for the NPP government. He is on record to have said the President is incorruptible.

“Fortunately for them, (referring to the NPP), they have a leader who is not known for messing around with material things,” he told the media in 2016.

The NDC founder noted also that the level of corruption he had to confront in 1979 when he captured power is nothing compared to what existed before Akufo-Addo won power.
