The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Toobu says President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Operations is setting the police back to 20212.
The Presidency issued a statement announcing the appointment of COP Yohuno under the advice of the Police Council at its meeting on Wednesday, 17th July 2024.
The move has ignited discussions surrounding the propriety of such an appointment, which is the first of its kind in the history of the Ghana Police Service.
Committing on the matter on GHOne TV, Mr. Toobu disclosed that deputy IGPs have given the administration hell.
“In fact, this is of less importance because if you have a full deputy IGP and you have another deputy IGP in charge of a portion of the work, that is not good enough. He’s giving room for people to think that he’s likely to appoint another deputy IGP in charge of administration and such a person is likely to become senior in the police structure.
“Two deputy Inspector generals of police, one administration, one operation has given us hell in the past and we never wanted to see that. So we used the law to curb it and the president is taking us back to history,” the Wa West lawmaker stated.
The Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has congratulated Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohnuo on his promotion to the rank of deputy Inspector-General of Police by President Akufo-Addo.
The IGP in a message shared on the Facebook wall of the Ghana Police Service said “We wish you all the best as we continue to work together with our colleagues in the pursuit of peace, security, law and order in our beloved country”.
He also extended the warm wishes of the entire Police service to the newly promoted deputy IGP.
