The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also serves as Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, also known as Pablo, has called on voters in Akwatia to rally behind the party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq., in the September 2 by-election.
The by-election, triggered by the passing of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, will see the NDC candidate face off with the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party (LPG).
Speaking during the youth wing’s campaign launch in the constituency, Pablo stressed that the NDC’s approach to parliamentary power is fundamentally different from that of the NPP.
He said although the NDC currently commands a two-thirds majority in Parliament, the party has chosen not to abuse that advantage.
“And so this election is not about taking somebody to balance the numbers in Parliament. It will change nothing. The NDC automatically has two-thirds in Parliament. This election will not change that result. The day we won Ablekuma North, it gave us an automatic two-thirds. That gives us absolute power to do whatever we want in the House. But we are a conscionable party. We are not like the others. We are reasonable,” he said.
He emphasized that the Akwatia contest goes beyond parliamentary arithmetic, noting that the NDC candidate offers leadership that prioritizes service and development.
Opare Addo described Bernard Bediako Baidoo as a candidate who embodies those qualities, urging constituents to entrust him with their mandate to bring meaningful development to the area.
“But it is about the development and welfare of Akwatia. It is about your voices being heard. It is about putting somebody who is fit for purpose. It is about having a voice that represents you well. It is about somebody who is going to render service. A leader who is going to serve you. Servant leadership. A leader you can approach when things confront you. And that is why I am here to introduce Bernard to you,” he added.
Meanwhile, security concerns have heightened in the constituency following the arrest of ten suspects and the retrieval of nine weapons by the Eastern South Regional Police Command in a series of operations ahead of the polls.
