Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has died, with sources attributing his death to a heart attack. The incident occurred on Monday, July 7, 2025.
His death comes amid ongoing legal controversies surrounding his election as MP for the Akwatia Constituency.
Kumi had been facing legal challenges following his swearing-in as MP on January 7, 2025, despite a court injunction barring him from assuming office. The injunction was the result of a lawsuit filed by National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate and former Akwatia MP, Henry Boakye-Yiadom, contesting the legitimacy of the election results.
Boakye-Yiadom’s legal team argued that Kumi’s victory — 19,269 votes against Boakye-Yiadom’s 17,206 — was under dispute and that the swearing-in was premature and in violation of court orders.
Throughout the contempt proceedings, Kumi had failed to personally appear before the court, prompting the bench warrant for his arrest.
A letter from the Minority Caucus in Parliament, citing parliamentary duties as the reason for his absence, was rejected by the court.
The legal battle was set to intensify before news emerged of his untimely passing.
His death brings a dramatic end to the controversy and leaves a political vacuum in the Akwatia Constituency.
