Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured a future government under his leadership will streamline the school feeding program to ensure quality feeding of students in Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the country.
This comes in the wake of the alleged supply of unwholesome rice in some schools in the country, prompting the Ministry of Education to launch an investigation into the matter.
In an interview on Joy FM, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa who doubles as the Chair of the Assurance Committee of Parliament said the ploy to distribute the consignment was deliberate on the part of the perpetrators.
“The National Food Buffer Stock Company clearly conspired with a company known as Lamens Investments Africa Limited. They used the Buffer Stock storage facility in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, to repackage expired rice.
“This company brought in rice from India, the brand ‘Moshosho rice’, which expired in December 2023. Upon realizing the rice had expired, they conspired with the Buffer Stock company to use their premises for re-bagging,” he alleged.
Speaking during a mini-rally at Asawinso in the Sefwi Wiaiwso constituency of the Western North region, the former president stated that the National Food Buffer Stock Company would no longer handle the supply of food to schools.
“I know you have heard that some expired rice have been repackaged and distributed by the National Buffer Stock to various SHSs across the country for our kids to eat.
“Because they do not want us to see that the rice has expired, they have repackaged it and distributed it to various schools to be given to our students to eat,” Mr. Mahama stated.
He continued: “That is why we the NDC say we won’t buy foodstuff for the schools. The money for the food will be given to the schools directly to make such purchases.”
