Arrest Anybody Who Obstructs Justice – Chiana-Paga MP to Security Agencies

The Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Niyema Billa Alamzy, has called on Ghana’s security agencies to act decisively by arresting individuals who obstruct lawful investigations and arrests.

His comments follow recent incidents involving supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who reportedly gathered in large numbers to prevent the arrest of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The attempted arrest was carried out by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Supporters had surrounded Chairman Wontumi’s residence, protesting the presence of armed security personnel.

A similar protest occurred at the residence of Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant, who was also arrested by the NIB to assist in ongoing investigations.

Speaking on the Weekly Review segment on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, MP Alamzy condemned the actions of the protestors and described the obstruction of law enforcement officers as a criminal offence.

He further urged political leaders to encourage their supporters to respect the law and allow investigative agencies to perform their duties without interference.

He slammed critics who argue that the security agencies are using “Rambo-style” tactics by security agencies, suggesting they make it more harsh.

Mr. Alamzy reiterated that those who interfere with the law should face arrest.

He said, “We are not witch hunting anybody and politically we are not trying to hurt anybody. We are trying to reset. We are inviting them to come on board for us to reset this country. We don’t have a problem if you are a parliamentarian or any appointee in the government of NDC and you decide to misbehave or embezzle resources and they come after you. That is your own case. We have to go away from I stand with, I stand with and try to know the reason why we are picking some people.”

He advised the NPP to seek court redress if they feel their member is being treated unfairly.

“From article 125 gives the power to you, if you want and feels he’s being treated unfairly, you can go to court, that one is there. They are talking about Rambo style. You see, advise your people that of there is an issue with an individual or an organisation with the investigative agencies, take your time, give them time to carry their duties. When they [Security] went to Chairman Wontumi, you saw the crowd that came there, when he came to Accra here, you saw the crowd that came there. So if you bring people like that, definitely,….I will even advise the agencies not to use Rambo style but use ‘jack nori’ style. If they go and anybody tries to prevent arrest, they should arrest the person because that is a crime. Preventing arrest is a crime, this is a country with laws.”
