ECOWAS leaders have formally endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the bloc’s candidate for Chairperson of the African Union in 2027, expressing strong confidence in his leadership credentials and experience.
The endorsement follows earlier support from ECOWAS Foreign Affairs Ministers during the 68th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa after the summit, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said the decision reflected a collective belief among regional leaders that President Mahama is well qualified to represent West Africa at the continental level.

According to him, the Authority unanimously agreed to back Ghana’s candidature when the rotating chairmanship of the African Union returns to the West African sub-region in 2027.
“The authority has also decided to support Ghana’s candidature for the chairmanship of the African Union for the year 2027. President Mahama deserves this community support, that’s one thing. We all know the competence of President Mahama and the leaders have full confidence in him to represent West Africa in that role, and that’s so much I can say,” Mr Touray stated.

The endorsement positions President Mahama as ECOWAS’ sole candidate for the prestigious continental role, underscoring the bloc’s desire to project experienced leadership and safeguard West Africa’s interests within the African Union.
