Ghana’s Black Stars endured a heavy 5-1 defeat against Austria national football team in an international friendly played at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna.
The match marked the team’s first outing of 2026, but it quickly turned into a difficult night for coach Otto Addo and his side. Austria took the lead in the 12th minute through Marcel Sabitzer, who converted from the penalty spot after a handball incident involving Jonas Adjetey.

Despite a few bright moments, including efforts from Prince Kwabena Adu and a crucial save by goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Ghana went into the break trailing 1-0.
Austria intensified their dominance in the second half, making several substitutions that paid off quickly. Sabitzer capitalised on a defensive error to set up Michael Gregoritsch for the second goal before Stefan Posch added a third from a corner.
Ghana responded with changes of their own, introducing debutants Marvin Senaya and Patric Pfeiffer, which briefly lifted the team’s performance. Captain Jordan Ayew pulled one back with an individual effort to give the Black Stars a consolation.

However, Austria remained in control, with Carney Chukwuemeka scoring the fourth after combining with Sabitzer, before Nicolas Seiwald sealed the emphatic win in stoppage time.
Ghana will look to bounce back when they face Germany national football team in Stuttgart, while Austria takes on South Korea in their next fixture.
