The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has nominated three individuals to serve on the General Legal Council. The nominees, who were selected in accordance with Section 1(2) of the Legal Profession Act, 1960, and Paragraph 2(1)(d) of the First Schedule to the Act, are expected to bring their expertise to bear on the Council.
According to the nomination letter, the three nominees are Honourable Francis Xavier Sosu, MP for Madina; Mrs. Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law; and Dr. Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana. Their nominations have been communicated to the President, who has been duly informed of the development.
The General Legal Council plays a crucial role in overseeing legal education and professional conduct in Ghana. The Council’s primary functions include regulating legal education, conducting examinations for lawyers, and ensuring that lawyers adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct.
Dr. Ayine’s nominations are seen as a significant step towards strengthening the country’s legal system. The Attorney-General’s decision to nominate individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the Council.
As stated in the Legal Profession Act, 1960, the General Legal Council is responsible for “regulating the legal profession in Ghana”. The Council’s membership includes representatives from the judiciary, the Ghana Bar Association, and the Ministry of Justice.
The nominations of Francis Xavier Sosu, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, and Dr. Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba are subject to confirmation by the relevant authorities. Once confirmed, they will join the Council in its efforts to promote excellence in the legal profession and uphold the highest standards of professional conduct.
