The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal Ahmed, has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election with a commanding 10,884 votes.
The by-election was conducted following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Toure, which created a vacancy in the constituency.
According to the results, Baba Ali secured 4,009 votes, Independent candidate Umar Sanda polled 1,885 votes, David Kanor, also an Independent candidate, obtained 107 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu of the LPG secured 43 votes.
In total, 17,048 votes were cast, with 120 rejected ballots recorded across 113 polling stations.
The election was marked by relatively low voter turnout, which party officials and observers attributed to the ongoing Ramadan fasting period, noting that Ayawaso East is a predominantly Muslim constituency.
President John Dramani Mahama recalled Baba Jamal Ahmed from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, paving the way for his return to Parliament.
Baba Jamal Ahmed’s win ensures the NDC retains the Ayawaso East seat after the late Mahama Toure’s tenure.
