The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana, JUSAG, has said its indefinite strike is still on, despite what it describes as a progressive meeting with the Chief Justice and Management of the Judicial Service.
In an updated statement issued after the meeting on Monday, November 2, signed by the General Secretary Abdulai Yakubu, JUSAG said its leadership, together with the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of the Judicial Service of Ghana, SSAJUG, held a crucial meeting with the Chief Justice and Management to resolve the impasse.
According to the Association, the meeting was progressive, as Management showed commitment to working with Government to meet the demands of JUSAG in order to bring the industrial action to an end.
“The meeting was progressive as Management showed commitment to working with the Government to meet the demands of JUSAG in order to bring the industrial action to an end,” the statement said.
JUSAG also disclosed that it has sighted a revised letter from the Ministry of Finance regarding the payment of allowances.
It added that Management agreed and tabled the outstanding issues before the Office of the President for expedited resolution.
“These developments are positive, and we commend the Honourable Chief Justice and Management for that. However, we wait [for] the outcome of the interventions to enable the National Executive Council of JUSAG [to] make a decision,” JUSAG said.
Despite the positive signals, the Association was emphatic that the strike has not been suspended.
“We wish to inform staff and the public that the strike is still on. When a revised and improved approval is received from the Government and satisfies our demands, we shall inform the public on the status of the strike,” the statement stressed.
The development comes hours after the Ministry of Finance approved the payment of 10 months’ arrears to Judicial Service staff and Members of the Lower Court Bench in two tranches, and after the Chief Justice directed that the Supreme Court should convene for normal business on Tuesday, November 3.
JUSAG declared the indefinite strike to press for full implementation of its conditions of service under C.I. 141.
