Political analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante-Otchere, has described former Vice PresidentDr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s win in the NPP 2026 presidential primaries as “not a convincing performance.”
The primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, recorded a massive turnout, with over 196,000 votes cast across more than 300 polling centres nationwide.
Out of 195,901 valid votes, Bawumia secured 110,643 votes (56.48%). His closest rivals drew significant support.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong polled 46,554 votes (23.76%), Dr. Bryan Acheampong received 36,303 votes (18.53%), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong collected 402 votes (0.21%). Additionally, 561 ballots were rejected.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Asante-Otchere noted that almost 44% of delegates voted against Bawumia, signaling notable internal resistance.
“From the word go, the organogram, the architecture of the register did not favor any candidate apart from Dr. Bawumia,” he said.

However, he added, “Dr. Bawumia making 56.48… that for me is not good enough. So we are looking at about 41 point something percent of people who were opposed to Dr. Bawumia and who wanted change.”
Dr. Asante-Otchere emphasized that the party will need to consolidate support ahead of the 2028 general elections, warning that internal dissent could affect cohesion if not addressed.
“The party will need to work on cohesion to ensure internal dissent does not affect its competitiveness moving forward,” he added.
