Leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has joined calls for government to take urgent steps to deal head-on with the issue of illegal mining.
Mr. Mornah who participated in the protest organized by Catholic priests on Friday said the Catholic Church had the responsibility to speak out against galamsey given its significant membership among the population.
“You will notice that my running mate and myself we are members of the Catholic Church and so the church has called on citizens of rational thinking to participate in something that will save our environment, and saving our environment means saving humanity,” he said.
He said the church depended on “human existence” without which the the faith could not be sustained.
He added that the call by the Catholic Church which has proven itself to be “worthy and stronger” was in the right direction.
Following the protest, the church presented a petition addressed to the President Akufo-Addo calling on government to adopt all necessary measures to rid the country of the illegal mining menace.
The three-page petition also called on political candidates in this year’s election to disavow galamsey publicly in order that their followers would follow suit.
