Drivers in Ghana will soon commute “non-stop” as the Ministry of Roads and Highways prepares to roll out an Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven tolling system.
Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, in an interview on GhOne TV’s Morning Show, GhToday revealed that the new system will eliminate physical toll booths in favour of seamless digital payments.
The new system, he added, will use AI-equipped cameras to identify vehicles and process payments automatically.
”When you are in a hurry for a meeting in Tema, you don’t need to stop anywhere,” the Minister stated.
This will help commuters commute to their destinations more quickly.
“You can drive through the AI camera, set your MoMo account to say when I drive through, automatically deduct the money. I don’t want to know anything like I have gone through camera, come and pay,” he said.
The policy shift aims at solving the twin problems of traffic congestion at toll points and revenue leakages associated with manual cash collection.
Commercial vehicles such as trotros and taxis will have bulk options as the system will recognize the high frequency of trips made by commercial transport operators.
”Some cars, including trotro and commercial cars, can also buy in bulk,” the Minister added.
This feature is expected to allow transport unions and individual commercial drivers to preload their accounts, ensuring they can operate throughout the day without managing multiple individual digital transactions.
