Ghana Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz insists the Black Stars is not the problem despite the team’s 4-2 defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The defeat leaves Ghana still searching for a win in an AFCON qualifier, with the Black Stars now without a victory in their last eight qualifying matches.
Queiroz took responsibility for the result and apologised to Ghanaians, while also apologising on behalf of the players.
“We deeply regret the results, and we apologise. I take responsibility for the players and the team,” Queiroz said.
The Portuguese coach admitted that the team faces challenges and believes the technical team must improve its preparation and organisation ahead of the next games.
“We’re facing some challenges but Black Stars is not the problem,” he said.
“We have to be better prepared and organised for the next games.”
Queiroz also revealed that Ghana started the game with only two available centre-backs, a situation that affected his options for the match.
“We started this game with only two centre backs available,” he explained.
Despite the disappointing result, the Black Stars coach insists the defeat does not make him a loser, pointing to his record in international football as evidence of his experience.
“I am the coach with the history of the most international wins, this defeat can’t make me a loser,” Queiroz said.
“This defeat doesn’t make me a loser.”
The coach also defended his decision to give opportunities to new players, insisting he is not afraid to make bold selections.
“I’m never scared to start new players for a game,” he said.
With questions surrounding his future following the defeat, Queiroz said he would be willing to resign if doing so would genuinely help improve football in Ghana.
“If my resignation would change the situation of Ghana football, I’ll be the first person to resign,” he insisted.
“If resigning is the best way to help football in Ghana, I’ll be the first to resign.”
However, Queiroz maintained that his focus remains on the team’s next assignment and promised that Ghana will be prepared to respond.
“We’re prepared to win the next match,” he said.
“This is not the first time a coach is losing a game,” Queiroz added.
The Black Stars will now have to regroup and find a way to revive their AFCON qualifying campaign after suffering another setback in the qualifiers.
