The Electoral Commission (EC) will today conduct balloting to determine the order of candidates on the ballot for the upcoming Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, scheduled for March 3.
Five candidates are in the running following the close of nominations on Tuesday, February 11.
They include Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and independents David Kanor and Umar Sanda Mohammed.
Gladys Penkrah, the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Director, confirmed that the balloting exercise would set the official sequence in which the candidates’ names will appear on the ballot papers.
The by-election follows the demise of the sitting NDC Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away after a short illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Toure had been serving his fourth term in Parliament and held key positions, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee and membership of the Roads and Transport, House, and Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committees.
The EC on Wednesday, February 11 invited political parties for an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to discuss issues in preparation for the March 3 by-election.
