President John Mahama has appointed Professor Kwasi Prempeh, the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD), as the Chair of the newly formed eight-member Constitutional Review Committee.

Other members of the committee include former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei; retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Sophia Adinyira; and former Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Prof. Kwame Karikari.

The rest are Executive Director of the Star Ghana Foundation, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu; a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law, Dr Godwin Djokoto; Executive Director of the Ashesi University Center for Leadership, Dr Esi Ansah; and Legal Practitioner, Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya, who will serve as Secretary.

The committee has been assigned to address gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous constitutional reforms from 2010 and 2023.

It is also expected to engage key stakeholders to solicit their views on proposals for amending the 1992 Constitution and to make actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing democratic governance in the country.

A statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson for the President, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, said: “The composition of the Committee underscores the President’s desire to engage persons of proven expertise, dedication to the service of the nation, and commitment to good governance to manage the process.”

“The Committee will present its recommendations for constitutional amendments within five (5) months for consideration by the Government,” the statement added.
