Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini says the Office of the Special Prosecutor does not need to be on the Judicial Council in order to fight corruption head-on.
Transparency International’s latest report released January 30, 2024 revealed that Ghana has maintained a score of 43 for the fourth consecutive year, ranking 70th out of 180 countries and territories assessed.
Commenting on the development, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng has stated that there is the need to review the Office of the Special Prosecutor laws to create a seat on the Judicial Council for the OSP.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the former lawmaker stated that the OSP has so far not demonstrated enough commitment to the fight against corruption.
According to him, the OSP has not also justified the confidence Ghanaians had in him to warrant any further amendment in the law and entrenchment of the OSP on the judicial council.
“I have always said that state institutions must collaborate and understand the position of Ghana in terms of our fight against corruption. So he has some sympathy from me. But I do not think that the remedy to building stakeholder collaboration is adding the office of the special prosecutor to the Judicial Council.
“You think that he can influence the judges with the Judicial Council, do you think that that is the way to go? To say that the OSP and the Judicial Council together with the judiciary are in conspiracy to trample on the rights of people,” Mr. Fuseini stated.
He continued: “I don’t think that we need to bring that perception. I just think that challenges are opportunities. Look at the other way so that if there are challenges you need to look at those challenges and device strategies to be able to overcome those challenges. Those strategies must be within the law.”
