Ghanaian entrepreneur and founder of the New Africa Foundation, Nana Kwame Bediako known in social circles as Freedom Jacob Caesar has bemoaned the country’s lack of preparedness in times of disasters.
Freedom Jacobs Caesar who toured some parts of the North Tongu District affected by the recent floods, on Saturday, observed the poor conditions in which the affected residents currently live following the disaster.
According to him, floods which have swept through parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions due to the spillage of the Akosombo Dam is devastating but presents an opportunity to rebuild the affected communities.
“As a country, a lot of things could put us in more jeopardy and we are not prepared; to see 12 or 18 people sleeping in one classroom, it tells me that we are not ready as a country.”
“But the good lord that has brought as here, I believe has granted us with great mindsets for us to be able to develop our people and to develop our country,” he added.
He expressed sympathy to the people but observed that the smiles on the faces of the affected is heartwarming and reassuring despite their predicaments.
At the Agbetikpo camp, where over 1,200 victims are being housed, he announced a plan to establish an agro-processing business in the area to provide livelihood support for the victims especially women.
The young businessman through his New Africa Foundation and in the company of some business associates also donated a variety of foodstuff and over 200 pup tents to augment efforts towards the provision of temporal shelter for victims at the Agbetikpo camp and the Mepe RC Basic evacuation centers.
The delegation was given a momentous reception with over 200 young Ghanaians mobilized from across the region to serve as volunteers who helped in erecting the pup tents.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who received the delegation expressed profound gratitude for the gesture and reiterated the overwhelming show of love from Ghanaians towards the affected people.
He was particularly excited about the presence of some Turkish businessmen who accompanied Freedom Jacob Caesar to visit the area.
