Former Managing Director of Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL), David Asante, has challenged claims that the transformation of the state-owned publisher occurred in the last eight months, insisting that the turnaround was the result of sustained effort under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government from 2017 to 2024.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 14, Asante responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to GPCL, during which the President reportedly described the company as having “not a very good brand” and compared it to “Siberia.”
“Yes, Mr. President, you are right, the Ghana Publishing handed over to us after 2016 was indeed like Siberia and was transformed from 2017 to 2024 under the NPP government with the hard work, commitment and dedication of Sector Ministers, Board of Directors, Management and staff,” Asante wrote. He stressed that the improvements did not happen “in the last 8 months,” describing such claims as “falsehood.”
The former MD highlighted the company’s growth during the NPP administration, noting a “robust profit and massive turnaround” and citing “over 3,000% increase in net assets of the company specifically for the year 2023” as recorded in audited accounts. He added that strategic investments in modern equipment and the establishment of a Kumasi branch positioned GPCL to handle sensitive national assignments, such as printing ballot papers for the 2020 and 2024 elections.

The former MD also dismissed suggestions that the NDC government had contributed to the turnaround.
“The NDC government has no moral right to seek to take credit for the transformation of the Ghana Publishing Company,” Asante wrote, noting that the company’s achievements, including the acquisition of high-value equipment and improved production capacity, were the result of concerted effort over several years.
