Former United Nations Advisor on Governance, Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah has affirmed that Ghana is currently facing a political and governance crisis.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament has vowed to protect its newfound majority status come Tuesday when the house resumes.
This development is in spite of a ruling by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court chaired by the Chief Justice freezing the declaration of seats of 4 MPs vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin over the witching of allegiance.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus after the Supreme Court ruling announced its members will return when sitting resumes given the pronouncement from the apex court of the land.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Prof. Agyemang-Duah stated that whenever attempts are made to defy the Supreme Court of any democratic country, it can trigger a political crisis.
“Obviously we do have a crisis, because listening to commentary by political actors including the press conference that was held yesterday by the leadership of the NDC, certainly, we do have a crisis. Because whenever threats are made to defy the Supreme Court of any nation in a democracy then certainly, we are going to have some dangerous moments ahead of us. So we do have a political crisis or a governance crisis,“ he remarked.
The former UN Governance Advisor also suggested that the necessary steps should be taken in order to uphold the sanctity of Ghana’s politics and avoid any constitutional crisis.
