Don’t be an MP if you want to be rich – Opare Ansah

The Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, Fredrick Opare Ansah, has said Parliament is not an ideal place for people to enrich themselves but rather to serve the citizens with the little resources available.

According to him, the perception borne out of the fact that MPs drive in luxurious vehicles is erroneous.

He said the vehicles are not for extravagance but for MPs to criss-cross their constituencies and also attend other Parliamentary duties with alacrity.

“My advice to anyone that is looking for money is to stay away from being an MP. When I was Managing Director, I was earning several thousand dollars a month and I had a decent life, indeed when I was coming to contest my primaries I already owned about five SUVs before I came to contest the primaries. Today I don’t know if I can boast of one or two SUVs because it is quite tough.”

Opare Ansah also a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament said this Saturday when he was speaking to the media at the side-lines of the maiden Edition of Suhum Easter Soup Kitchen he has instituted to fete, provide health services and fun for his constituents.

“I am just lucky to be one of the luckiest MPs who still have some investments to my name and so I am able to organize some of these things from private sources. By and Large if you aim at making money then certainly parliament is not a place to come.”

According to Opare Ansah, the program was organized to provide opportunity for his constituent’s particular those with Kwahu lineage who couldn’t make it to celebrate Easter in their home towns, to also make merry while in Suhum.

The program preceded with a health walk which was patronized by over 5000 people most of whom were taken through health screening exercises.

Meanwhile, about 10,000 people are expected to be registered for free on the National Health Insurance Scheme by the MP.

It will be climaxed Sunday with a Kenkey Party at the Suhum Lorry Terminal.

The Chief of Suhum, Osabarima Ayeh Kofi II , who chaired the function called for the sustainability of the program by any Member of Parliament who succeeds the incumbent MP in future elections.
