Political Scientist, Nii Amartei Amartey has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against using negative words towards the Electoral Commission (EC), urging them to refrain from portraying the institution as evil and instead utilize legal channels to address their concerns.
Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kojo Mensah, Mr. Amartey expressed concern about the tone of recent statements from NDC figures, highlighting the potential negative impact on public discourse and perception of the EC.
“We need to be very cautious the way we talk because people are learning from us,” Mr. Amartey emphasized. “People are communicating the way we communicate, the children are learning from us. The language he used to carry his concern is not good – ‘incompetent and criminally cooked EC’, I think that’s not good enough. These words paint the EC in a bad light.”
Amartey further stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of the EC, arguing that excessive criticism and labeling the institution as evil could erode public trust and create an atmosphere of distrust.
“Don’t turn the EC into a punching bag, rendering them as evil,” he advised.
Instead, Mr. Amartey suggested that the NDC pursue legal avenues if they have unresolved concerns regarding the EC’s operations or decisions.
“The NDC should go to court if they still have concerns,” he stated.
Mr. Amartey’s comments are in regard to the NDC’s refusal to take EC’s pen drive saying the commission has not given them a summary of the voter’s summary and calling for re-exhibition of voters after a forensic audit of the voter register.
