Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged Cenpower Generation Limited to sustain its environmental protection initiatives and strengthen its engagement with communities surrounding its Kpone Thermal Power Plant.
She made the call at a ceremony marking 10 years of operations at the 375-megawatt power plant, where she served as the special guest of honour.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the company for extending its contributions beyond electricity generation to community development, particularly its environmental and educational initiatives.
She highlighted Cenpower’s efforts to address plastic pollution along the shoreline of Sega Beach, as well as its waste management and biodiversity conservation education programme for students of Paul Methodist School.
“Cenpower’s contribution extends beyond electricity generation to the communities around the plant. I understand that you are addressing plastic pollution along the shoreline of Sega Beach. We are very appreciative of it,” she said.

She also praised the company’s educational programme, describing its efforts to promote waste management and biodiversity conservation among schoolchildren as worthwhile initiatives.
The Vice President encouraged Cenpower to maintain its relationship with neighbouring communities and remain attentive to the environmental and social consequences of its operations.
“I encourage Cenpower to maintain its relationship with the surrounding communities and continue to pay attention to the environmental and social consequences of its operations,” she added.

Government secures $66m discount on Cenpower arrears
The anniversary celebration also coincided with the signing of an amended and restated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the Government of Ghana and Cenpower Generation Limited.
Under the revised agreement, the government has secured a $66 million discount on approximately $400 million in outstanding arrears owed to the independent power producer.
About $59 million of the outstanding amount was paid to Cenpower in 2025 as part of the government’s efforts to settle legacy debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Cenpower Board Chairman Samuel Nana Brew-Butler said the company agreed to the discount as a sacrifice towards supporting the country.
He explained that although the outstanding arrears had reached approximately $400 million at one point, the company considered it necessary to make the concession.
“So we are able to do the exchange of this document, which is the amended and restated Power Purchase Agreement, which allows us to give a whopping discount to all of you here. So, $66 million. If you remember, I said at one stage, what was outstanding was about $400 million, but it’s our country, so that sacrifice had to be made,” he said.
In return, the government has granted Cenpower a 10-year extension to its existing PPA and agreed to a reduction in the tariff charged by the company.
Cenpower’s contribution to electricity generation
Since commencing operations, Cenpower Generation Limited has supplied electricity to approximately one million households.
The company has also received international recognition for its operational performance, including recognition under the Operational Reliability Analysis Program (ORAP).

The 10th anniversary celebration provided an opportunity to recognise the company’s contribution to Ghana’s electricity supply and its engagement with communities around the Kpone power facility.
